One of the biggest differences between CMC and F2F is the fact that with F2F you can read a person’s body language where as with CMC it is impossible unless your using something like skype but even then its delayed and harder to catch little gestures. I will always prefer F2F because of this difference. With CMC, for example, you could be text up a cute boy or girl, and think they are really into you, BUT they could be with another person literally while you guys are texting (we all know this is very common) or they could be interested in you only as a friend but since you can’t see their body language or facial gestures it makes it much more difficult to interpret the message and the relationship that is or is not being built. Although both methods are valuable forms of communication, I feel CMC makes it harder for one to create on continue with meaningful relationships with family, friends, and spouses. With f2f you can touch the person, hug them, laugh together, and looking at a smile will always work better then trying to make someone smile over a phone or chat. I mean how many long distance relationships, even some friendships, work compared too those who see each other daily or weekly?

Hello,
ReplyDeleteYou brought up some interesting points about CMC vs. f2f communication. I agree with you that there are some obvious differences. You brought up the example of how even though Skype allows for its users to see each other there can still be a delay that affects how body language is perceived. I thought that was a great point to bring up because I have noticed this with a few different forms of media that allow us to have a f2f via computer type communication. I do think this is something that will change and get better as technology advances and that will be very interesting to see if there is no delay at all. I know even on cell phones and telephones there is a delay that we can notice if we put the other person on speaker. I have a friend who is constantly putting me on speaker phone, and I have to listen to everything I say as it echoes back to me.
hey bing! very good post. i too spoke of non-verbal communication in some of the major differences between these two forms of group communication. it is so true that some CMC can be delayed and other technical difficulties can change the communication dynamic drastically. i know that if in a F2F group if i say a remark and everybody in the group is completely silent i would take that as a cue that maybe the group did not agree with what i had to say. if in a skype conversation this could occur by accident if some delay happened and i could misinterpret that delay as intentional and basically take it the wrong way. in CMC it is easy for misunderstanding to occur.
